Food for Thought on fear, freedom, and the words we don’t say…
Hello, my friend. How’s your heart today?
What would you do if you could release your inhibitions?
This question has been lingering in my mind for months now—proving to be the greatest challenger of my thoughts and choices. This question has sat with me as I write, teach, lead, and live in my day-to-day.
I’m constantly reminded that there’s “more” available to me beyond my self-imposed limitations, beyond fear and my personal inhibitions, but reaching out for what’s available to me isn’t always easy.
Overthinking gets in the way.
Past experiences get in the way.
Caring about what other people think gets in the way.
Self-doubt gets in the way.
Imposter syndrome gets in the way.
Past mistakes get in the way.
Feelings of unworthiness get in the way.
Can you relate?
When I slow down long enough to actually look at it—none of those things are facts.
They’re fear-based thoughts.
And here’s the crazy part about it-so much of what we do or don’t do in life is simply fear disguised in viable reasons why we can’t show up to what already belongs to us!
Let's take a moment to unpack this word that's been showing up for me: inhibition.
Inhibition is a feeling that makes you self-conscious and unable to act in a relaxed and natural way. It's the inner tension that slows you down, keeps you stuck, keeps you small even when there’s space to be free.
(And I don’t know about you, but I want to live in courageous freedom.)
So, I’ve been curiously observing how inhibition shows up in my life. And how it’s rooted in fear. Fear of judgment. Fear of failure. Fear of getting it wrong. Fear of being misunderstood or rejected or laughed at or not taken seriously.
But what if all of that is just noise?
What if we CAN move forward with the fear being present but just not in charge?
I believe it's possible for me and for you.
That’s where writing comes in.
The process of writing is a vulnerable practice. It unwraps the layers of inhibition. It brings truth into the light. It makes fear visible so you can actually work with it. And when you see it clearly, you don’t have to be led by it.
Here are five prompts I’ve been using to loosen the grip of inhibition and move toward freedom-on the page, in my work, and in my life:
5 Reflective Prompts to Help You Release Your Inhibitions:
What belief is keeping me from taking the next step? Where did it come from?
What am I afraid will happen if I fully show up right here?
What part of me feels like it has to hold back—and what does that part need to feel safe?
What would I do differently if I believed I was already worthy?
What story am I ready to stop telling myself?
Listen, you don’t have to fight fear. It's only an emotion. You just have to stop letting it control and define your life.
So, let's write it out.
Let’s face it gently.
Let's challenge it with compassion.
And above all, let’s keep showing up.
Because the life you want-the message, the freedom, the confidence-it’s already available. You just gotta move the clutter out of the way to access it.
So again I ask…What would YOU do if you released your inhibitions?
Thank you for taking time to read my words.
Take what you need & take good care,
Nicole Annette
